The Chinese played an intrinsic role in the clearing of the rugged Australian Bush. Chinese market gardeners and ring-barkers
were essential in opening up the new frontier ahead of early farming settlers. Their tenacious work ethic and ability to succeed in those harsh early conditions was widely respected by other pioneering settlers, and hasbecome stuff of legend in the long history of Outback Australia.

As the gold depleted and they looked for alternative work, gangs of Chinese workers traversed the isolated and remote outback stations, scrubcutting, ringbarking, dam & well sinking. Elio Alban, the owner of Australian Old Vine Wines, cleared the family farm side by side with his father (an Italian migrant named Ernesto). Clearing was hot, hard and heavy work, even in the 1950's with stores and supplies close to hand. 100 years prior the Chinese scrubcutters had to travel hundreds of miles to replenish their supplies. Upon discovering that the Chinese played an important role in the clearing of rich natural farmland throughout the wine growing region of the Riverina. The Alban Estate family owned winery decided to release a special range of wines to pay recognition to those early Chinese scrubcutters and ringbarkers. Being a descendent of a migrant family himself, and knowing the important roll migrants from all backgrounds have played in developing our proud nation. Australian Old Vine Wines would like to honour those Chinese workers who originally cleared the
area where his much loved "old vines"grow today. Ringbarked tree's still stand today as a reminder of the early Chinese scrubcutters.
